Days later, the town’s former mayor, John Washburn, near death from a stroke, confesses to the killing. His wife and two children vehemently deny it, but when Sophie Greenway, food maven and friend of the family, happens upon an old snapshot, a bundle of letters, and a tattoo of a red-eyed snake, she wonders about Washburn’s innocence. Unlike the recipe for a prize meat loaf, this murder is seasoned with spicy secrets and a generous portion of scandal, which Sophie dares to bring to a roiling boil. . . . |

The Best Slow & Easy Recipes: A Best Recipe Classic $32.74 Something magical happens with certain foods when you slow down the cooking: flavors deepen and become more complex, meat turns meltingly tender, and fruit and vegetables develop a rich, caramelized exterior. With The Best Slow Cooking Recipes, the cooks at America’s Test Kitchen have taken a fresh approach to classic slow cooking techniques to give you uncomplicated recipes that are worth the wait. This approach has countless benefits–it’s a great choice for busy cooks (much of the time is "hands-free," allowing you to turn to other tasks); it’s economical (you can take an inexpensive, tough cut of meat and turn it into an unbelievably tender roast); and many recipes can easily be made ahead (such as Smoky Southwestern Chili with Chipotle, Black Beans, and Corn). You’ll find new flavor variations on familiar favorites, with recipes for Tuscan White Bean Stew, Indoor Pulled Pork, Porter Braised Short Ribs, Smothered Pork Chops with Spicy Collard Greens, and Braised Chicken with Almonds and Pine Nuts. We also dedicate an entire chapter to cooking en cocotte, or casserole roasting–and if this technique is unfamiliar to you, it won’t be for long. Here, meat is simply placed in a Dutch oven with a few aromatics and left to slowly cook in its own juices at a low temperature in the oven, resulting in unbelievably tender meat with concentrated flavor. This uncomplicated method works with everything from pork, beef, and lamb to chicken and fish (Salmon en Cocotte with Leeks and White Wine is a favorite). But we don’t stop there. We’ve also slowed down the cooking of side dishes, vegetables, and even fruit, making the most of every ingredient by giving the flavors time to deepen andconcentrate. The result? A variety of richly flavored recipes to round out your meal–including Baked Risotto with Mushrooms, Savory Bread Pudding with Spinach and Gruyere, Braised Leeks, Baked Apples with Honey and Creme Fraiche, and Roasted Pears with Caramel Sauce. |

Put away that second pot for boiling pasta and cook it in its sauce right in the skillet. Start pizzas on the stovetop in the skillet and finish with a hot blast in the oven (still in the skillet) Spruce up your stir-fry repertoire with new and innovative ideas. One pan. Less clean up. A world of great and easy recipes. |

In The Kansas Cookbook, Carey and Naas present more than 400 delicious recipes that reflect the state’s history, its ethnic diversity, and its agriculture. No more hot turkey sandwiches on Wonder bread or Iceberg lettuce awash in orange dressing—the stereotypes of Midwestern food—the recipes presented here include such tasty delights as morel mushroom turnovers, “cure-all” chicken soup, sirloin steak with midwest marinade, shepherd pie, Lou Belle’s best-ever meat loaf, country-style ribs with barbecue sauce, Czech sausage, Parson’s pan-fried chicken, fried pheasant, catfish grilled in corn husks, Drukla noodles, Bohne berogge, farmer’s corn casserole, candied sweet potatoes, savory squash cobbler, German baked beans, sweet and sour cabbage slaw, black bean salad, Sunflower State whole wheat bread, oatmeal spice muffins, whole wheat buttermilk biscuits, apple butter, dandelion jelly, jalapeno pepper relish, pioneer apple pie, black walnut pie, Mennonite wedding cake, persimmon pudding, kolaches, Swedish ginger cookies—and much more! Many of the recipes have been contributed by more than 150 cooks from around the state and represent years of fine-tuning family favorites in countless kitchens. Others are Carey and Naas’s innovative adaptations of historic recipes or new creations that make use of indigenous ingredients. All have been tested—and tasted. The food is simple, honest fare: no glitz, no razzle-dazzle, just good taste. Each recipe is accompanied by an historical note, a personal comment or reminiscence from its contributor, or a serving suggestion. The Kansas Cookbook is illustrated |
